Radiotherapy. 77-year-old male patient undergoing palliative radiotherapy to treat a massive neck mass caused by metastatic carcinoma (cancer) of unknown origin. Metastatic cancer is cancer that has spread (metastasised) from another area of the body. Palliative care focuses on providing relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of serious illness, regardless of the prognosis. Here, the patient is wearing a custom-made rigid mask to hold their head in position during treatment. Guide lasers (bright lines) are used to help plan and target the radiotherapy so that the radiation is focused on precisely the same site in each treatment session.
