I have been asked to tell you somethingof one such little life-story today. William Herman Wilhelm, son of Mr. andMrs. James H. Wilhehn. of Mauch , raitered Lehigh in 1883. TheWilhehns came from a line of distinguishedMoravian ancestors. One of his ancestors. ALUMNI BULLETIN OF LEHIGH UNIVERSITY 15 located in Germantown in 1726 and, comingunder the teachings of Count Zinzendorf, re-moved to Bethlehem. He edited a Catechismwritten by Count Zinzendorf which wasprinted by Benjamin Franklin. This an-cestor, Rev. John Bechtel, is buried in yonderMoravian Cemetery. While still in German-town, he established a school for girls whichwas the nucleus of the present MoravianSeminary. Another ancestor was the founder of thefirst newspaper in Northampton County. Stillanother, one of the charter trustees ofLafayette College. While at Lehigh, young Wilhelm became,by invitation, a charter member of the PsiUpsilon Fraternity and in his first year atLehigh a vacancy occurred at the MilitaryAcademy at West Point for the EleventhCongressional District of Pennsylvania a successful competitive examination, hereceived the appointment and entered WestPoint, the youngest man in his class.
