Hewas a son of Joel Densmore, a veteran of the war of1812, and a brother of James Densmore, of type-writer fame. He received his ed-ucation in the public schools andin Alleghany, college, and mar-ried, at the age of twenty-three,Priscilla Compton, a daughter ofHugh Compton, another veteranof the war of 1813. While engagedin the oil regions in Pennsylvaniain 1861, with his brother James,under the firm name of the Dens-more Brothers, and where hemade a fortune, his attention wascalled to the Sholes & Gliddentypewriter, and, with his brotherJames (q. v.), he promptly devot-ed his energies to the a naturally inventivemind, he made many suggestionsand improvements, which, at alater date, culminated in the Dens-more machine.
