Catherine Brechignac (born 1946), French physicist, at a 'Speed Science' event organised to allow 100 young people to meet a range of eminent French scientists. Brechignac pioneered the field of cluster physics. She was president of the French scientific research body (CNRS) from 2006 to 2010. Elected a member of the French Academy of Science in 2005, since 2011 she has been one of the Academy's Permanent Secretaries. She was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1996.
