Macrophotograph of strong and lightwave carbon fibre fabric. Before use, the fabric must be impregnated with a polymer resin. Once coated, the material may be laid into moulds. The moulds are assembled and placed under pressure and heat. This cures the polymer resin which results in the formation of a component in carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). CFRP is used in a variety of applications where low weight is vital and moderate structural strength may be tolerated. Examples include body panels of racing cars and aircraft. Structural components may be made by orienting successive layers of the material in alternating directions. Horizontal object size of this section: 9 mm.
