Put down a thin layer and pound itdown hard, and so on until the bed is 12 to 18inches thick. It soon becomes pretty hot, butlet the heat recede until it is only 85 to 90 de-grees. Then make holes, say a foot apart, andput in the spawn, two or three pieces as largeas a walnut to each hole. Cover the holes andpress the soil solid and smooth. Let the bedremain in this condition about 12 days; thencover the bed with 2 inches cf fresh loam, and. MUSHROOMS. over this put 4 or 5 inches of hay or straw, andthe work is done.
