Cup and Ring Stone, Lordenshaws, near Rothbury, Northumberland

The Horseshoe cup and ring stone is one of the most accessible and best preserved of the many examples of ancient rock art in Northumberland. It is close to the Iron Age hill fort of Lordenshaws on Garleigh Moor which lies between the river valley of the Coquet with the market town of Rothbury and the escarpment of the Simonside Hills. The markings on the rock probably predate the hill fort by many centuries as they were probably formed in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age and are between 3000 and 5000 years old. The hill fort probably dates to about 350 BC.
