Muscle nerve endings. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of two motor neuron (nerve cell) end plates (dark dots) in skeletal (striated) muscle. Skeletal muscle is under voluntary control. The neurons are seen running from bottom to middle centre. The neurons end in several terminal boutons. These form neuromuscular junctions, a type of synapse (nerve junction), where they meet the muscle cells. Signals are relayed in the form of chemical neurotransmitters from the end plates to the muscle.
