It was not, however, until I hadreached Mainz—after traveling from 3:50 a. m. till4:28 P. M.—that I could obtain fairly detailed direc-tions. And yet placards announcing the Parsifalperformances were hanging up in the depots all alongthe route! I traveled on the lightning express from Cologne toMainz.
