Fontaine du Palmier (Palm Tree Fountain) Place du Châtelet, Paris, France - built 1806-1808

Commanded by Napoleon and built between 1806 and 1808 to commemorate his military victories in Egypt and Italy. At the top, "victory" or "la victoire" holds two laurel wreaths aloft. This is a copy of a sculpture by Louis Simon Boizot; the original is preserved in a court at the Carnavalet Museum. The column represents the bark and foliage of palm trees, hence its name.
