This series of images are of the mountains near the Swiss resort town of Zermatt seen here with a memorial plaque to Edward Whymper on the wall of the Monte Rosa Hotel on the main street of Zermatt. It was from this hotel that Whymper set out on the 14 July 1865 with his party of 7 with friends Lord Francis Douglas, Rev Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow, plus Swiss mountain guides Michael Croz, Peter Taugwalder and his son also Peter, to climb the Matterhorn mountain via the Hoernli Ridge. While the ascent was successfu,l but on the descent a tragic accident occurred when just below the summit one of the party slipped and dragged others with him. The thin rope broke and Michel Croz along with Hadow, Hudson, Douglas all fell the entire length of the north face to their deaths. The body of Lord Francis Douglas was never recovered and he remains interred somewhere on the Matterhorn. Meanwhile 100km away in the Silvretta Alps on the Swiss Austrian border another first ascent was taking place on another famous mountain that of Piz Buin.
