Ouch Savy practices her Takhe ( a traditional Cambodian instrument that usually has three to five legs supporting it. When performing, the player sits beside the instrument. The left hand runs up and down the strings, while the right hand plucks them using a plectrum. The word "Takhe" means alligator or crocodile, as the instrument from above resembles the shape of one, in addition, the frets are also rather like crocodile's Savy is Master Kong Nay's female protégé. Savy is one of the new generation of Chapei musicians who are at the beginning of an emerging musical awareness that could come to rival imported karaoke and pop. Savy has already made over 20 television appearances and performed improvisational pieces with the Los Angeles-based Khmer American fusion outfit, Dengue Living Arts works to support the revival of traditional Khmer performing arts and to inspire contemporary artistic expression. CLA supports arts education, mentorship, networking opportunities, education, career development, and income generating projects for master performing artists who survived the Khmer Rouge as well as the next generation of student artists.
