The fire that sweptic was more than they could standand they were obliged to retire. Twoheavy guns were placed in positionand aimed upon the Confederates. Ina maddening charge, the bayonetsagain flashed in the light and theUnion soldiers swept everything be-fore them, planting the Stars andStripes on the opposite bank. Fivehundred of their men lay dead behindthem. By this time Burnside hadcrossed the stream and after a quickencounter the battle was ended withboth armies severely punished andneither inclined to resume the
