Delta II rocket explosion

Explosion of a Delta II rocket on January, 17 1997 13 seconds into its launch. The rocket was to send up and orbit a GPS (GPS IIR-1) satellite for the United States Air Force Global Positioning System. The failure was due to a crack in the casing of one of the solid rocket motors. The GPS satellite was intended to replace an aging satellite in the network but the older satellite was kept in service until a replacement to this lost satellite could be launched.
