As soon as the frost was out of the ground inApril work was commenced on the basement, the masonry ofwhich was completed about the middle of May. The 17thday of that month was appointed as the date for laying thecorner-stone by Gov. Leslie M. Shaw. This event markedthe beginning of the superstructure.
