The car is then run backto the plant for another set of boxes which have been pre-pared in the meantime. This work of unloading boxes onthe street is easily done in a few minutes between the regu-. San Francisco Track—Bitumen Car Loaded with Six Filled Boxes lar passenger service, there being no hold-up of passengercars on this account, except possibly a minute in some company is equipped with two of these cars, whichtake the place of five dump wagons and teams. The crane and the trolley post are made collapsible onaccount of the head room under the mixing platform atthe plant. As this platform is so low, it was necessary toreduce the extreme height of the car crane and trolley postto 7 ft. Before passing under the platform the trolley postand crane are dropped to the low position and can be raisedto the working position after the boxes have been filled andthe car leaves the platform. The crane was made by thecompany. The bitumen paving, 2]/2 in. thick, is placed on a 6-in. con-crete base in and between the tracks. The header blocks,
