. Three voyages of a naturalist, being an account of many little- known islands in three oceans visited by the "Valhalla," ; . trict regulations enforced on DassenIsland, where the firing of guns is prohibited forfear of disturbing the nesting birds. As we drew close to the island, after a fewhours passage, we came in view of enormousnumbers of penguins sitting in rows upon theshore, while the sea in the immediate neighbour-hood was crowded with them. I had never beforeseen so many birds together, but even this wasnothing to what we were to witness the nextday. As soon as we landed we were met by oneof the lighthouse-keepers, as well as by one of themen whose duty it is to see that the birds areundisturbed. Dassen Island is in no place more than a fewfeet above the level of the sea; it is entirelyuncultivated, and almost completely covered witha low growing ice-plant. On the windward sidethe shore is rocky, but in no place steep, whileon the leeward side it is sandy. The rest of theisland is covered with a deep layer of sandin which the penguins dig holes for their nestsat the roots of the ice-plants. mi W
