STUPA Buddhist Temple with flags & qurky decorative details in Freetown Christiania, Copenhagen The hippie community and anarchist commune established by squatters in a former Military complex in Christianshavn, Copenhagen, Denmark Christiania was established when squatters settled in a former military complex and on the surrounding land in 1971. Approximately a 1000 people live in the area in a self-contained society that is self-regulatory and tolerated by the authorities. Christiania remains a place where marijuana is freely sold but hard drugs are not permitted. The Christianites condone the drug dealing and marijuana sales are confined to Pusher Street where dealers operate pop-up stalls. Christianites originally paid a "rent" into a communal treasury. Their economy was self-reliant and supported by the non-drug economic activities of the Freetown -- bars, restaurants, shops & cultural activities. In June 2011, after several years of negotiation with the government, Christiania's lawyer, Knud Foldschack, arrived at a decision to establish the Christiania Foundation that would buy land from the state and the squatters became landowners. Tourists are tolerated but asked to refrain from taking photographs in Pusher Street.
