As mentioned previously and as indicated in Fig. 3, repeated alter- nation between antennation and dorsal riding is the dominant feature of courtship in M. angusticollis. Genital insertion is attempted rarely and is limited typically to situations in which copulation is imminent. Although the genital insertion attempt can immediately follow dorsal riding as well as antennation, the former sequence seems to be highly unlikely unless the dorsal riding is of short duration and is preceded.
