Better conditions prevailed in a few-years, however, and when Franklin Countywas organized in 1803, PVanklinton wasmade the county seat, and was considereda town of considerable importance. The seat of government for the newState of Ohio was originally at (^hillicothe,but this being so far from the northernsettlements along Lake Erie, a more central. Several placeswere considered, among them Franklinton,on account of its central location, but itslow situation and reputed unhealthinesswere deemed objectionable, and no decisionwas reached at the time.
