Aftergraduating, he devoted him-self with great assiduity to thestudy of law, partly with hisfather and partly with EdmundRandolph, one of the most distin-guished lawyers of Virginia. At nineteen years of age, necommenced the practice of success was rapid and aston-ishing. It is said that threemonths had not elapsed ere therewas scarcely a case on the dock-et of the court in which he waslot retained. When but twenty-one years of age, hewas almost unanimously elected to a seat in the StateLegislature. He connected himself with the Demo-cratic party, and warmly advocated the measures ofJefferson and Madison. For five successive years hewas elected to the Legislature, receiving nearly theunanimo
