. Canadian forest industries July-December 1921. Lumbering; Forests and forestry; Forest products; Wood-pulp industry; Wood-using industries. Wonderful developments have taken place in the manufacture of British Columbia Red Cedar Shingles in the past 10 years. In the earlier days of the industry production was the main object, and as a result many thousands of cheap, thin shingles were produced and used by the building public. Since then both manufacturers and consu mers have had an opportunity to observe the result of this erroneous practice, and a great deal of research has been made which has resulted in plac- ing upon the market a vastly superior product, the present vertical grain shingle sawn 5 butts to 2 inches and thicker. The days for using thin, flat grain shingles as roofing material are rapidly vanishing. It does necessarily follow that the thin and cheap grades of shingles are not being manufactured and that there is no proper use for them. On the contrary, architects and structural engineers, as well as practical builders, are awakening to the fact that thin shingles for sidewall covering offer tre- mendous possibilities. It has been proven that shingles are a great deal cheaper than practically any other sidewall covering, and in addition to this strong point, it has been demonstrated that they constitute a cov- ering which is cool in summer and warm in winter. In every section of thp continent great development is taking place in shingle homes. An in- teresting competition will shortly take place throughout the country to secure photographs of homes where shingles have been used entirely for sidewall and roof covering. Cash prizes in the amount of $1, will be offered for photographs of the most attractive shingle homes. These photographs will be utilized in preparing an attractive booklet containing building suggestions. The lumber and construction trade will await this competition with considerable interest.
