This is the ruins of what remains of the Roman fortified town of Vindolanda near Hadrians Wall in Northumberland that stretched from the Roman City of Carlisle in the west to Newcastle upon Tyne in the east built as a defensive border to the lands of the Celts in the north. It also marked the northernmost point of the Roman Empire.
