Makalu, a mountain in the Himalayas, eastern Nepal, which rises 8475 metres above sea level. The face visible here, the south face, is 3750 metres high. The rugged appearance of the ice at the foot of the face is due to icefalls and the moraine (scattered rocks) in the foreground was left by a retreating glacier.
