The News was by no means slow to realize the need of, or reluctant to takethe lead in, illustration. The difficulty was the tardiness of inventors in supplyingpracticable means of engraving for the daily press. Ultimately The News maderapid strides in the enlivening of its pages with pictures; and in this respect it hasalways led in the vast community it has served.
