In parts of the South where corn is not a successful crop, its place isbeing taken by the peanut, the entire plant being fed. It also enters use-fully into the cropping system, on the cotton and tobacco lands of theSouthern states. In parts of the South where the cotton-boll weevil istroublesome, peanuts are more advantageously cultivated than cotton. Soil and Climatic Conditions.—A light, loamy, sandy soil is best suitedto peanuts. A dark soil will produce the forage crop satisfactorily, but isapt to discolor the nuts for market purposes. Heavier soils may be usedfor forage purposes, but if grown for nuts, a loose soil is necessary, owingto the fact that the nuts must burrow into the soil in order to A Peanut Plant. ^ 1 Farmers Bulletin 431, U. S. Dept. of Agriculture. 162 ANNUAL LEGUMES 163 A compact soil does not facilitate this very necessary process. The peanutis more susceptible to frost than the bean plant. It requires a long seasonwithout frost in order to develop nuts. The small Spanish peanuts requireabout 115 days to mature and the large varieties need a still longer this reason they are most successfully grown in the frost-free regions, such as the South Atlantic and Gulf states and westward into grown for forage, however, a wider range of climate is possible, peanuts being successfully grown as far north as Maryland and Delaware. Fertilizers and Lime Required.—Soils that are adapted to peanutswill not require much commercial fertilizer, although the peanut respondsreadily to a moderate use of it. On river bottom
