Silhouette of Irish Famine Memorial Penn's Landing Philadelphia Pennsylvania

In the center of a garden and small park built over I-95, 35 silicon-coated bronze statues of men women and children are grouped in clusters along a timeline that begins at one end with figures unsuccessfully hoeing potato fields, progresses to emigration to America aboard a ship, and ends with their arrival, greeted by a man waving to them. Depicting the victims and survivors of An Gorta Mor, the memorial's figures are impressionistically modeled, which draws attention to details in their faces and gestures.
