Langerhans cells and microbes. Computer illustration showing Langerhans cells (blue) from the neck of a man taking up microbes (green). In skin infections, the Langerhans cells take up and process microbial antigens to become fully functional antigen-presenting cells (APCs). APC process and display antigens on their surface, and present them to T-cells (white blood cells) as part of the immune response.
