Autism, also known as Kanner syndrome, is a mental disorder in which the person has an inability to communicate by speech or to form abstract concepts. As children, autistic people have a preference to play alone and fail to form relationships. They may develop behavioural abnormalities such as sudden screaming, self injury and hyperactivity. Only a minority of autistic people have an independent life, most needing continuous, special care. The precise cause of autism is still unknown.
