Diagram of the probability of major earthquakes along the San Andreas and Hayward faults in California. The figure above each bar is the expected magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter scale. The percentage figure is the probability of a future earthquake happening. The tiny central California village of Parkfield (population 34) stands out because seismologists have made a firm prediction of a magnitude 6 earthquake there before 1993. Other places could generate more severe shocks, but less is known of their seismology. The arrows show the crustal plate movements along the San Andreas fault.
