Robert J., son of Melchinger Robertand Justina (Maul) Lewis, was born inDover, York county, Pennsylvania, De-cember 30, 1864. His early and academiceducation was obtained in the publicschools of Dover and York high upon the profession of law heentered Yale University (law school)whence he was graduated , class of1891, which fact entitled him to practicein the Connecticut courts. On August 3,1891, he was admitted to the York countybar, later being admitted to all State andFederal courts of the district. He beganpractice in York and is now actively en-gaged there in his profession. In 1893 he was elected a member ofthe Board of School Control from the20. In 1896 he was the Repub-lican candidate for mayor of York, andafter a close vote was finally declareddefeated by a majurity of seventeen. In1S98 he was the unsuccessful candidateof his party for Representative in Con-gress, but carried his own city of Yorkby a majority of 896. In 1900 Air. Lewiswas again the candidate of his party forCongress from the Nineteenth Congres-sional District, composed (then) of thecounties of Adams, Cumberland andYork. An evidence of the high esteemand one particularly gratifying is thefact that although President McKinleylost the district by 1495, Mr. Lewis onthe same ticket carried it by a majorityof 986.
