Triassic Earth

Ideal landscape of the Mid to Late Triassic Period, from fossils found in the German Keuper deposits. Illustration from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition. In Europe, the Keuper group is characterized by thick beds of rock salt. On the right of our landscape is the sea, separated by a dune system from a shallow basin in which these salt deposits may have formed. The animal making tracks on the shore is Labyrinthodon, an early amphibian. The trees are Calamites arenaceus, and the great horsetails are Equisetum columnare.
