William Whewell (1794 – 1866) was an English polymath, poet, scientist, Anglican priest, philosopher, theologian, and historian of science. He was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. He published work in the disciplines of mechanics, mathematics, physics, geology, ocean tides, astronomy, and economics and still found the time to translate the works of Goethe, write sermons and theological tracts.
