The surface of the Augustan frieze wascut down and a new surface irregularly andcrudely made to receive the restoration inscrip-tion of Gallienus, stating that the walls ofVerona were built between April 3 and Decem-ber 4 of the year 265 by order of the EmperorGallienus. This statement is guilty of evidentexaggeration. It would have been quite impos-sible to surround the entire city with walls andgates in these few months. We know, besides,from Tacitus, that in the struggle before theadvent of Vespasian,
