Anthony Wayne Smith, Sr.,married Eliza Jane Miles Jarvis, daughter of OliverJarvis, of Pittsburgh, and they are the parents of fourchildren, of whom three are living: Anthony Wood-ward, of whom extended mention follows; WashingtonJarvis, who is treasurer of the A. Anthony Woodward Smith was born in Pittsburgh,Jan. 8, 1877. He was educated in the schools of thatcity, and graduated from Old Central High School in1896, when nineteen years of age. He then became asso-ciated with his father in business, becoming a perma-nent member of the firm. Washington Jarvis Smith en-tered the business in 1898, and later became treasurer of. tcc^ BIOGRAPHICAL 255 A. W. Smith Company, which position he holds at thistime. The A. W. Smith Company, which was founded byAnthony Wayne Smith, Sr., in 1871, has long been asignificant factor in the world of horticulture, and theelder Mr. Smith, whose energy and ability placed itamong the leading enterprises even of a generation ago,is still active in the business, at the age of seventy-sixyears. The concern was incorporated in 1909 with thefollowing officers (no change having been made since) :A. W. Smith, Sr., president; A. W. Smith, Jr., secretary;and W. J. Smith, treasurer. Their interests now com-prise very extensive and complete offices and general offices and salesroom occupy the entirefirst and third floors of the Keenan building, Pittsburgh,and another large salesroom is located at the corner ofStanwix and Penn avenues.
