In 1849 he sailed around the Hornin the ship Balance, going to Californiawith the other men of that day in quest ofgold. After a time he returned to Stratfordand was engaged for a time in mercantilebusiness, but spent his last years on a was first selectman of the town for anumber of years and also was representativeto the general assembly, serving from 1881 to1884, two terms of two years each. He was,for a number of years interested in the Strat-!ford Oyster Company. He married CarolineJ. -^XaSlsl;^
