Percheron horses have definite breed characteristics. Theyare usually black or gray in color, 15I to 17 hands high, weighingfrom 1600 to 2100 pounds. They have a strong conformationand are noted for their constitution and endurance. They gen-erally have excellent feet, excellent heads and necks, and in everyrespect are fine horses. For a combination of constitution, en-durance, feet, speed, and strength, they have few equals andno superiors. (See Exercise 4.) THE HORSE 129 The Clydesdale horse has been developed by Scotch breedersalong the Clyde River in Scotland. Though they are of mixedorigin, since about 1850 they have been kept pure. Clydesdalehorses are now found chiefly in Germany, Russia, Sweden, Argen-tine Republic, and the United States.
