Eadweard Muybridge. Historical artwork of the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904) seen in front of a projection of a horse and rider. Muybridge emigrated to California, USA, when he was 22 and became a well known professional photographer. He pioneered the use of photography to study human and animal locomotion, employing ingenious new techniques. In the late 1870s he proved that a cantering horse has all its feet off the ground at certain times by using 24 small cameras to photograph it. In 1887 he published 20,000 pictures in Animal Locomotion. He invented the Zoopraxiscope, a piece of projection equipment.
