In a picture like The Institution of the Golden Fleece, or in Margaret of Austria receiv-ing the Oaths of the Archers of Antwerp, we seem to be looking at some magnificent windowof stained-glass, glowing with rich, transparent color, and then in the picture of YoungLuther Singing Hymns in the Streets of Eisenach, from which-we take a single figure, copiedfrom the oi-iginal drawing by Leys, we find a quiet, sober scheme of color suited to the char-acter of the subject. It is not to be denied that in bringing so much from the old art of theglass-stainer, the illuminator, and the tapestry-weaver. Leys, while he enriched his time withbeautiful color and sumptuous design, perpetuated much that was stifl and awkward as quaintness may sometimes be thought excessive, but it is redeemed in general by thesincerity of the arti
