Old gun, Norwegian Stave Kirke and edge of the lava field caused by the eruption of Eldfell in 1973, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland. The church was given to Heimaey by Norway when the population returned to the island. The eruption lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January.
