The Georgians are a finerace of people, and so are all the natives of the Caucasus. The mountainair all the world over has a reputation for developing strength and intelli-gence among those who breathe it. Since the occupation of Georgia and the other parts of the Caucasusby Russia, the people are no longer sold as slaves for Turkish may be the faults of the Russian rule, it is certainly far inadvance of that of Turkey. The for-mer is on the bank of the river, and its streets are narrow and dirty; thenew part is on higher ground, and has been chiefly built by the Russianssince they obtained possession of the country. In this part the streets arewide, and lined with many handsome buildings; in the old part there areseveral Armenian churches and caiavansaries, and the greater portion ofthe commerce is transacted there. We saw a great many Russian soldiers, and were told that a largegarrison is always maintained in Tiflis, which is a central point fromwhich troops can be sent in any direction.
