Coronavirus pig butchery 1 of 10. Markets closed – pigs expensive to feed – Quichuan native extended family butchers two pigs because of Coronavirus.

Live pigs are sold in Otavalo market, but Otavalo has Coronavirus, so travel there is banned. But feeding the pigs would cost too much. Conventional butchery requires great care to avoid damage to skin that will be tanned for leather. The locals eat the skin, so the lenghty process of shaving the pig can be avoided by burning off the hair with a blow torch. That means that the pig needs to be scraped and scrubbed and washed to get rid of the burned matter. Conventionally the pig is hung to facilitate skinning and removing the entrails. Here the pig is not hung up until the entrails have been removed to a large bin.
