Nile irrigation pump. Child with a cow at a pump that is used to raise water in buckets on a wheel (upper right) from the River Nile (in background). The pump can be operated by humans, or by animals yoked to the central turning wheel. The water will be used to irrigate fields through pipes, aqueducts and ditches (across bottom). Photographed in 1936 at Khartoum, Sudan, on the Blue Nile. This photograph was obtained by the American Colony Photo Department of Jerusalem (from 1940 the Matson Photo Service) during an airline tour that followed the Nile from its Delta to Lake Victoria.
