ONTARIO SESSIONAL PAPERS, 1914, . 3-0L0GiCAL j^iaoirr Gorgets—Fesdaxts—Pikuceu Tablets. These artifacts are supposed to have l^een used for ornamental purposes, suspended from the neck or some other part of the body. Usually the stone wasselected on account of its fine veining, and when polished must liaAe looked verywell. In very few of these pieces do we find any evidence of wear in the holeswhich are most uniformly done; being l)ored from both sides in the same wayas tiie bird-stones, pipes and other stone artifacts. There is an almost unlimitedvariety of these stones, with the holes in every conceivalde place, some with one, others with two, three and four perforations. The following pieces were mostly found in the counties of Oxford, Middlesexand Waterloo. Some carry an appearance of great age, and others are almostas fresh as the day they were made. One is led to wonder that the weather withall its changes has not exercised a more injurious effect upon them. The largemajority of these pieces are surface Fig. No. 32,885. Figure 32885, a gorget from the L. D. Brown collection, was found inthe Township of Nissouri. It is made of beautiful striped slate, square on thesides. The hole is slightly to one side and shows some slight evidences of thickness it exceeds most of tlie artifacts of this kind. AIM iLKOL()r;i(Ai. iM:i()i:t. 71
