This 1915 illustration shows the Egyptian goddess Isis with the mighty Ra. The fallen body is the god ill from the bite.

According to ancient Egyptian mythology, Isis was the goddess of rebirth. Her mother was Nut, the goddess of the sky, and her father was Geb, the god of the earth. Ra was the great god of the sun and the most powerful deity, but became uncaring. Isis created a snake made from Ra's saliva and mud and made it bite Ra. Ra fell ill. Isis offered to cure him. She did and, in return, Ra had to tell her his secret name, which was the source of his power. Ra did, but Isis now possessed the power of life and death and became the mightiest of the deities. This illustration, dating to 1915, pictures Isis with the mighty Ra. The fallen body is the god ill from the bite.
