Contraceptive pills. Blisterpack of femodene oral contraceptive pills used for birth control. Oral contraceptives work by altering the levels of sex hormones in the woman's body. Femodene pills contain the synthetic female sex hormones ethinyloestradiol and gestodene. Ethinyloestradiol blocks the monthly release of a mature egg (ovulation). Gestodene affects the woman's monthly menstrual cycle. The pill is a very effective method of contraception, with less than one pregnancy predicted when used by 100 women over the course of a year.
