Visitors to Reading town centre were treated to a free ride on one the first Greenwave (Compressed Natural Gas) CNG buses in the South East UK today 4/5/ Each Greenwave bus has 8 composite gas tanks on the roof, that are filled with natural gas from the grid. Costing roughly the same to run as diesel buses, the CNG buses are ultra green, producing no particulates (soot) no hydrocarbons, virtually zero carbon as well as being quieter and smoother. James Freeman CEO of Reading buses told me "Ordered last October at a cost of £190,000 each, the first 11 buses built by Alexander Dennis (ADL) in Falkirk Scotland will be in use from Tues 7th May. Each Greenwave bus has 8 composite gas tanks on the roof, that are filled with natural gas from the grid. Costing roughly the same to run as diesel buses, the CNG buses are ultra green, producing no particulates (soot) no hydrocarbons, virtually zero carbon as well as being quieter and smoother. With 9 buses still in production, Reading Buses will have the largest fleet of gas buses in the UK."
