That is to say, they were its popularliterature. History is to a great extent merely thestory of organisation, the gradual selecting andordering of elements already present. And in thatsense the Puranas form a reflection and imitationof the Jatakas. The elements of both were presentbefore. Buddhism organised the one in Pali, andHinduism, later, the other in Sanskrit.
