Mosquito sterility research. French entomologist Frederic Simard (right) carrying out research into the breeding of sterile male tiger mosquitoes. He is selecting a mosquito for a biopsy. These sterile mosquitoes have been genetically modified or sterilized by radiation. They are released in large numbers in the wild, helping to reduce mosquito populations. This in turn reduces the prevalence of diseases they spread. Simard is research director at the French Research Institute for Development (IRD).
