But within twenty-four hoursfrom the signing Of the contract at Washington, he had all the iron works,foundries and machine shops of St. Louis, started on the work; and insideof two weeks he had more than 4,000 men working in alternate gangs bynight and day, Sundays included, so that not an hour should be lost.
